With two brothers who are fitters and a Dad who owns trucks, diesel runs in the family for our newest HD mechanic apprentice Jana.
Jana was previously working for a cleaning company in Tom Price when she first stepped onto a mine site. Part of the job included cleaning out the mobile equipment, which planted the seed for Jana's new career path.
"I was blown away by the size of the machinery. People at the mine site asked me if I wanted to learn how to operate the equipment, to which I said no, I want to learn how to fix them," she said.
It's not just the equipment that interests Jana but the mining industry as a whole.
"I find it fascinating how all these different jobs and pieces of equipment all work together seamlessly to create something so huge and exciting." She said.
Although new to the company, Jana is not new to the Schlam name. Having grown up in Boddington, the apprentice was familiar with the company's work at the Newmont Boddington Gold Mine.
"There's an excitement about Schlam at the moment, especially in the mechanical space. It’s growing fast, and I’m glad to be on board,” said Jana.
According to Jarrod Broughton at the Apprentice and Training Company (ATC), Jana is leading the charge in the heavy diesel apprentice space.
"There's a huge demand for FIFO HD fitters right now, and Jana is the first for our company, and we couldn’t think of a better home for her than Schlam.
“There’s a wealth of talented young people out there who are keen to get into the heavy diesel side of the mining industry, but places are limited. So for a company like Schlam step up and offer a placement is good news for the individual and the growth of the industry as a whole,” said Jarrod.
We’re on the hunt for HD mechanics to join our growing team in our Mining Services Division. With excellent long-term contracts and permanent opportunities available. For more information about rates and rosters, email recruitment@schlam.com or call 6148 5555.
