The first Motocross race is thought to have been held in Scotland in 1912. Originally called “Hare Scrambles,” the sport has become a popular past time for people in rural areas including for Schlam Engineering’s staff in Newman.
Field Service Supervisor, Milos Hofmann says the appeal is difficult to explain.
“It’s exhilarating. You’re alone and left to your own devices when you hop on the bike.
“The unknown of a motocross race can produce all different kinds of outcomes, which is always challenging and exciting,” he said.
According to Milos, who has worked for Schlam for the past eight months, the Newman Motocross Club is a cornerstone of the local community.
“There is a big focus on motocross within the junior classes in the community here in Newman and the senior riders seem to have taken up riding as a hobby and for the social aspect, which is good as the club is very welcoming,” continues Milos.
In February this year, Schlam was lucky enough to be invited to sponsor the 2020 MX Memorial Race, the club’s biggest event for 2020.
The event was held at the Echo Park Motocross Track over the Labour Day long weekend and attracted a host of top riders from not only the Pilbara but across Western Australia.
Newman Motorcycle Club Vice President, Brian Kokir says that the event attracted a crowd of well over 250 spectators and over large group of riders from across the State.
“We saw some of the fastest riders in the region kick up the dirt on the day at the Newman Memorial. It was an awesome day of family focused entertainment,” said Kokir.
The Club President is a relative newbie to the sport who got involved via his son Jack who has been riding for three years now.
“There is a big focus on Juniors within the Newman community and the potential they can produce.
“We’re grateful for Schlam’s support. If that assistance wasn’t there from companies like Schlam then these events would not be able to go ahead, as it is run by volunteers and sponsored by local business,” said Kokir.
It was a good day for Milos too who came sixth in the senior’s competition overall.
“I’m not out to win or be the best. I just enjoy the sport, the competition and getting involved in the community,” said Milos.
